오늘은 미국의 노동절입니다.

모처럼의 휴일이라 느즈막하게 일어나 어제 주일을 지낸 피로를 털며 우리 모임에 들어왔더니, 글쎄 홈피 지기 김 균배 동문이 올린 노래, Starry, Starry Night이 흘러나오며 제 가슴을 적십니다.  

Stars and clouds, 별과 구름, 마침 어제 주일, 이곳에서 행한 강론이 별과 구름에 관한 것이었기에, 이것도 인연이다 싶어, 동문 교우들과 나누고자, 부랴, 대충, 우리 말로 옮겨서 여기 올립니다. 애초에 영문으로 쓴 것이라 한번 우리 글로 옮기고 나니, 아무래도 어색한 데가 있고 우리 말 번역이 마땅찮은데, 그래서 망서리다가 영문 원본을 함께 올리는 것이니, 삐뚤게 보지 마시고, 다른 데 퍼가서 망신시키지 않기 바랍니다.    

이 글을 정 상모 형님께 바칩니다. 어렸을 적부터 제게 참 많이도 베푸셨고 키워주셨습니다. 저는 다 갚지 못해도, 순환의 원리가, 그리고 하느님의 사랑이 갚으실 것입니다.

There are 2 things I appreciate the most among the things that we can see through human eyes. The first is watching the stars at night,

and the other, watching the clouds at daytime.

사람의 눈으로 볼 수 있는 것 중에 가장 귀한 2가지가 있습니다. 하나는 밤에 별들을 보는 것이고, 또 하나는 낮에 구름을 보는 것입니다.

If I ever wanted to go back to Afghanistan, it would be because of  the stars pouring  over me  from the sky, each night I spent at every Forward Operating Base, or FOB, high on the mountain sides of the country.

제가 만일 아프가니스탄에 다시 가고픈 생각이 든다면, 그것은. 그 나라, 산 중턱 고지대의 전진작전기지에서 지내던 밤이면 밤마다 하늘에서 쏟아져 내리던 별들 때문일 것입니다. 

They were the same stars that I had seen in the cities and towns  everywhere else in the world, but they were different, because on the Afghan mountain sides, there were literally no lights at all on the ground at night.

그 별들은 세상의 다른 어느 도시와 마을에서 보던 별과 같은 별이었습니다. 그러나 그 별들은 달랐습니다. 아프간 산중턱에는 밤이면 말 그대로 땅 위에 불빛 한 점 없었기 때문입니다.

The stars in Afghanistan taught me a very simple truth: that if we really want to meet the stars in the sky, we need to put out all the lights on the ground. The best night to watch the stars would be a dark night with no moon, and if you had one, try a night vision goggle, to look up the sky with it on. You will be greeted by so many stars you have never seen before with your bare eyes. The universe will unveil itself and come close to you. You will be on board a star trek flight.

아프가니스탄의 별들은 아주 간단한 진리를 하나 가르쳐 주었습니다. 별을 보려면 땅 위에 모든 불을 꺼야 한다는 것입니다. 가장 좋은 밤은 달이 없는 그믐입니다. 야간 투시경이 있다면 그걸 쓰고 하늘을 올려다 보십시오. 우주가 베일을 벗고 가까이 다가올 것입니다. 당신은 스타 트렉의 우주선을 타게 됩니다.

They were the same stars that I had seen in the Himalayas, but they were quite different, because they twinkled in silence, from the sky above the battle fields. They would whisper to me about peace and war, love and hatred, eternity and vanity, the distance in space between the stars and me, and the intimacy in my heart between me and the stars. .

그 별들은 히말라야에서 보았던 별과 같은 별이지만, 그러나 달랐습니다. 그 별들은 전투가 벌어지는 땅 위의 하늘에서 침묵 속에 반짝였기 때문입니다. 별들은 제게, 평화와 전쟁에 대해서, 사랑과 미움에 대해서, 영원과 허무, 별들과 저를 가르는 우주 공간의 거리, 그리고 저와 별들을 잇는 친밀한 제 마음을 속삭였습니다.

Now, here in the Front Range in the Rockies, I often lose myself watching the clouds in the sky.

Clouds are visible clusters of small droplets or billions of ice crystals. 

In a sense, it is an ocean floating in the sky, traveling up and down, back and forth, in constant circulation. They appear in variety of figures and different faces, then they disappear. We may catch a glimpse of its formation, which in fact, is never in a constant shape at any moment, but in the process of continual changes. 

이제 이곳 록키 산맥의 Front Range (록키 산맥 동쪽 끝 산맥의 이름) 자락에서, 저는 하늘의 구름을 보느라 정신이 없을 때가 있습니다. 구름이란 작은 물방울의 덩어리, 아니면 수억 개의 얼음 결정이 눈에 보이는 것입니다. 생각해 보면, 구름은 하늘에 떠있는 바다입니다. 위 아래로, 앞 뒤로, 떠서 흘러가는 순환의 지속입니다. 구름의 모습을 잠깐 잡았다고 여길지 몰라도, 실은, 어느 순간에도 고정되지 않은 연속된 변화의 과정일 뿐입니다.    

Someone can say that it doesn’t exist, it just appears to exist. Still, how beautiful and mysterious this phenomenon is.

누군가 구름은 존재하지 않고 다만 존재하는 것처럼 보일 뿐이라고 말할 것입니다. 현상에 지나지 않는다 해도, 그러나 얼마나 아름다우며 신비롭습니까?

It was said: about 175 million years ago that a basin plate in the Pacific ocean was pushed up to begin the formation of The Rockies.

Then, 120 million years ago, the western ranges and the main ranges, and again, around 85 million years ago the front ranges and the foothills came to its current formation. It is also a phenomenon of nature.
